EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
