This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional biological terror, but within Together exists a deep contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

A Debut Feature Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The story commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his support system. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple confront the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake right now.
